FPL Studs or Duds?

If you listened to our podcast this week, you already know where we stand on all 16 FPL scorers in double digits after Gameweek 1. On the blog this week, as you make your final preparations for Gameweek 2, we take a look at last week's top three scorers at each position. Will he continue to get great results? Or were they one-week wonders?

Goalkeeper:

Alex McCarthy (SOU): Brian was definitive. Southampton is McCarthy's team now. If you are going to go with a Saint, he is likely to play somewhere in the back. You could do worse than McCarthy.

Wayne Hennessey (CRY): Hennessey was great against Fulham. He goes up against Liverpool, though, this week. Plus, you have to believe that he will be moved to the bench at some point this season. This screams one-week wonder to me.

Ederson (MCI): Of course. Why not? Go with Ederson. He's on a great team, and their schedule is great. He won't make a ton of saves, so you are banking on clean sheets. But who cares? Plus, at some point, he will get an assist. You just know it.

Defender:

Benjamin Mendy (MCI): For many of the same reasons as Ederson, why not? Go with Mendy. Ride him as long as he's healthy. If he stays healthy, he will be a top FPL defender. Sure, he's a rotation risk, but everyone is on City. It hasn't stopped you from transferring in that midfielder or forward, has it?

Jose Holebas (WAT): The more things change, the more they stay the same. It doesn't matter who their manager is, Watford tend to get on these hot streaks, especially early in the season. Holebas had two assists, but you cannot count on that every time. Or maybe even any more times.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (CRY): Now this one is intriguing. His low price and seemingly stable starting place have many owners rushing to him. For now, unless you need to use your free transfer on KDB or somewhere else more pressing than cheap defender, you should get this guy.

Midfielders:

Sadio Mane (LIV): Yes. What? You need me to say more?

Roberto Pereyra (WAT): See Holebas above. Replace "assists" with "goals." Okay, so maybe there's more to like here. He will not be consistent. He may not even consistently play once he stops scoring. This might be the riskiest of all the transfers you could do from this entire list, but we wouldn't ridicule you if you did it.

Richarlison (EVE): By all accounts, his "injury" at the end of GW1 was just a cramp. You should get this guy. He's a given for at least a hot start to the season.

Forwards:

Callum Wilson (BOU): His low price and high points last week are a temptation this week. Josh King will get his, though, too. If you are going to do it, do it now because he is known to wear down and get hurt over time.

Jamie Vardy (LEI): At some point, we are going to trust Jamie Vardy, right? All the guy does is score. Get him now as your second forward and marvel at the end of the season how many total points he earned for you.

Raul Jimenez (WOL): Everybody loves Wolves after GW1. That match with Everton was a blast. It seems likely that when Wolves find any success this season, Jimenez will be near it. If you are one of the people who thinks that Wolves might finish top half, you should put your money (and free transfer) where your mouth is.
